James Smith is a busnessman.His company export a lot of machiery,but James didn't speak any foreign languages. Last year he went to France on a business trip.While he was staying for a few days in a small hotel just outside Nice, he had an interesting experience.The first morning,he sat eating his breakfast when a Frenchman came to is table and sat down the Frenchemansaid «Bon appetit»,so James Smith smiled and repleied «James Smith».As neither could speak the outher's languade, they ate their meals in silence.
The next morning exectly the same thing occured and the scene repeated on the third morning,so James went to see the manager of the hotel who is spoke excellent English,and said,«I don't wanted to complain,but there is a very strange man staying in your hotel. I begin to get worried.Every morning he came to my table and tells me his name»
«Really?» said the manager,and what does he say. something like «Bon appetit» replied James No, no, said the manager, that isn't his name. that is just a polite expression in French.We said it to other people before we start to eat.It simply means have a nice meal. Oh,yes,how silly of me, said James.Tank you for the explanation. The next morning,he wait for the Frenchman to come up to the table,and before he could speak,James said in is best French accent«Bon appetit the Frenchman was a little surprised,but then he smiledand responded in his best Engish«James Smith»
